Kirstie Macleod's "Stitches from Around the World" workshop, is connected to her internationally acclaimed The Red Dress Project
What happens in the workshop?
The workshop typically begins with a presentation by Kirstie Macleod about the journey of The Red Dress, a collaborative embroidery artwork created over 14 years by nearly 380 embroiderers from 51 countries. Participants are guided around the garment and introduced to the stories, traditions and embroidery techniques represented in the work.
The practical component involves creating a "World Embroidery Sampler", where participants learn and stitch motifs and techniques inspired by different cultures. Examples mentioned include:
- Otomi embroidery motifs from Mexico
- Bedouin-inspired palm motifs
- Border stitches used by Lambani women originally from Afghanistan and now living in southern India
- Other stitches and decorative traditions gathered from around the world through the Red Dress project.
