weaving circles workshop

with Sarah Zalewski

Join local Scenic Rim artist and Queensland College of Art graduate in Contemporary Australian Indigenous Arts, Sarah Zalewski for a hands-on weaving workshop that celebrates connection to culture and place. A descendant of the Migunberri people of Mount Barney, Sarah uses her creative practice to connect with her family and ancestors. In this relaxed and inclusive session, participants will use pre-fired ceramic discs (prepared by curator and artist Larissa Warren) and learn traditional weaving techniques. Sarah will also guide the group in preparing local natural grasses and weaving those plus raffia into the ceramic forms to create personal and culturally rich artworks.

Sarah Zalewski

Sarah is currently studying a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Arts. Still defining her art practice, she is passionate about creating art and enjoys the creative process, using this as a way of connecting to her family and ancestors. Zalewski’s Indigenous lineage is partially known; her ancestors have been traced back to the Scenic Rim area (Migunberri people of Mount Barney). Zalewski focuses on her family, conveying a connection to her ancestors within her work. In 2024 Zalewski exhibited in ‘Beneath this Skin’ at Queensland State Archives and was nominated to partake in ‘Undergrowth’ at Queensland College of Art Galleries.

Shifting Ground is a touring exhibition curated by Larissa Warren and presented in partnership with Scenic Rim Regional Council and Museums & Galleries Queensland. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government's Visions of Australia program. Museums & Galleries Queensland is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
