ENGAGING WITH ART WORKSHOP

by LEONIE HART

Commissioned to upskill our Gallery Volunteers, this workshop will also appeal to Gallery members and anyone interested in learning more about visual art. Engaging with Art is a practical, confidence-building workshop that offers simple, enjoyable ways to talk about and understand art

Tuesday, 17 March 2026, 10.30am - 11.30am

Led by Art Historian Leonie Hart, the session begins with an introduction to her background and a friendly overview of art history—not as something intimidating, but as a useful tool for curiosity and connection.

Participants will explore how context shapes art and how this knowledge creates multiple entry points for viewing, questioning and discussion. Leonie will introduce SMAC—a simple formal analysis approach (Subject, Material, Audience, Composition)—and guide the group through interactive examples using real artworks.

The workshop also shares easy tips for engaging visitors of all ages, from recognising genres and themes to inviting people to choose and talk about their favourite work. Expect a relaxed, hands-on session that makes looking at art more rewarding—for you and for every visitor you welcome.
